The Day Education programs are designed to expand each participant's independence and experience by providing personalized schedules and customized materials which are motivating and rewarding. Participants benefit from individualized instruction, structure and a variety of challenging activities in varied environments. GWArc's programs are committed to maximizing choice, dignity, independence, community inclusion, and opportunities for people with significant cognitive, physical and intellectual disabilities. GWArc’s Day Education programs are located at 56 Chestnut Street in Waltham and provide training in fine motor skills, personal care, leisure skills, community access, horticulture, communication skills, socialization, and exercise/large motor skills in varied environments. Referral/coordination of ancillary services, and individual service plans are also provided. Therapeutic services are available, including: nursing, physical therapy, speech, language and communication therapy, occupational therapy, behavioral consultation, mobility, and expressive therapy. Work skills training is also provided in our Pathways to Independence programs. Day Education programs are funded by the Division of Medical Assistance (MASS Health), the Department of Developmental Services (DDS), private donations and private fees. The Commission on Accreditation of Rehabilitation Facilities (CARF) accredits the Day Habilitation and Pathways programs. The Pathways program is also certified by Quality Enhancement Survey (QUEST), a division of the Department of Developmental Services. GWArc has consistently received the highest level of certification from both organizations. Day Habilitation at Chestnut Street
GWArc's Day Habilitation Program serves 30 adults with severe developmental, physical, and other disabilities who can benefit from a structured program that focuses on increasing functional skill development with therapeutic and health supports provided in varied environments. Equipment is adapted or modified by our consultants to enable the participants to use materials as independently as possible. Using a comprehensive assessment of each participant's unique skills, preferences and learning style, our team develops detailed service plans that include an individualized schedule of daily training and therapeutic activities that are implemented across program environments. The program serves older people with developmental disabilities who have retired from work training programs. They participate in therapeutic, recreational, and leisure activities. Pathways to Independence at Chestnut Street
The driving philosophy behind the Pathways to Independence program is that every person can attain work and job related skills with appropriate interventions and support. Pathways was created in 1994 in response to a long standing need for day program services that combine part-time work training with therapeutic and support services. Participants include 23 adults with significant developmental, physical, and other disabilities. Participants create crafts, receive paid work training, develop a healthy exercise routine, and gain communication and interpersonal skills. Community and volunteer activities are scheduled to broaden participant's skills in varied adult roles.
